In the second half of the 19th century, a Polish man named Albert Libiszewski settled in eastern Switzerland – in the small town of Bischofszell, in the canton of Thurgau. He founded a large family and a decorative painting business. Anton Albert Libiszewski adorned local buildings with his artwork and created stage sets for theatres and photographic studios. Today, many of these works no longer exist – the buildings have been renovated or demolished, and the painted backdrops were never meant to last.
The Historical Museum in Bischofszell preserves a handful of his unique pieces and photographs documenting his work and the Libiszewski family.
In this illustrated lecture, historian and former museum curator Alexandra M. Rückert traces the artistic and personal journey of this forgotten Polish decorative painter using archival materials and historical photos.
